Porta Potty Dimensions and Sizes

A standard porta potty is about 44 inches wide, 48 inches deep, and 90 inches tall (roughly 7.5 feet). These porta potty dimensions come from manufacturer spec sheets as of 2026. The unit weighs about 165 to 195 pounds empty, and its holding tank holds 60 to 70 gallons.

Standard units, deluxe flushing units, ADA-accessible units, hand wash stations, and restroom trailers each need a spot that fits. Austin Portable Toilets uses their sizes to plan placement on an event site or job site. You'll also need to account for gates, door swing, level ground, and truck access. Our guide to how many units you need covers the count.

Standard porta potty dimensions

Across PolyJohn and Satellite Industries spec sheets, standard single units range from 43.5 to 47 inches wide, 47 to 48 inches deep, and 88 to 91 inches tall. For interior space, the PolyJohn PJN3 spec sheet lists 41 by 41 inches of floor inside the PJN3 and 82 inches of headroom.

Where manufacturers publish door-opening dimensions for standard single units, the openings range from 24 to 26.25 inches wide and 72 to 76 inches tall. The seat is about 19 inches high, and the holding tank holds 60 to 70 gallons.

Deluxe flushing unit size

The flushing and sink versions in our luxury porta potty rentals use the same shell as the matching standard model, so their outside size stays the same. They weigh more, though: PolyJohn's Fleet weighs 195 pounds as a static unit and 243 pounds as a flush unit. The Fleet measures 47 inches wide, 48 inches long, and 91 inches tall. PolyJohn's flushing Fleet sink holds 20 gallons of fresh water.

ADA porta potty dimensions

Wheelchair-accessible units are much bigger than standard units. Common models measure about 62 inches wide and 62 inches deep, while PolyJohn's We'll Care III measures up to 85.2 inches wide by 92.4 inches deep. Their doors open about 32 to 32.75 inches wide, and the units weigh 240 to 395 pounds. A wheelchair-accessible label doesn't establish ADA compliance. PolyJohn says accessible units aren't automatically ADA-compliant, and Satellite calls its Liberty an alternative to a fully compliant unit.

The 2010 ADA Standards call for a turning space of 60 inches in diameter (section 304.3.1) and a door clear width of 32 inches minimum (section 404.2.3). They also specify a toilet seat 17 to 19 inches high (section 604.4) and grab bars 33 to 36 inches above the floor (section 609.4).

For events, including temporary events, the U.S. Access Board says at least 5% of portable units in each cluster must be accessible. Units used only by construction workers on a construction site are exempt (section 203.2).

Hand wash station sizes

Our hand wash station rentals include freestanding stations that run 58 to 62 inches tall. Their footprint is about 19 to 26.5 inches by 21.5 to 26.5 inches, small enough to sit beside a row of units. PolyJohn's two-station Bravo stands 62 inches tall, holds 22 gallons of fresh water, and provides about 350 uses before a refill. PolyJohn's 4-person station holds 20 gallons of fresh water and provides about 325 uses.

Restroom trailer sizes

A 2-station trailer has a box length of about 8 to 12 feet, a 3-station trailer about 12 to 16 feet, and a 6- to 8-station trailer about 15 to 24 feet. Widths run about 6 to 8.5 feet. The hitch adds to the length you'll need to accommodate. Satellite's trailers run 5 feet longer with the tongue than the box alone, so include that space when planning restroom trailer rentals.

Power and water hookups also need to fit your site. PolyJohn's PRO trailers use 30-amp shore power and a city water hose connection. United Site Services asks for a dedicated 20-amp, 110-volt power source within 50 feet of the front of the trailer, and a standard garden hose spigot for water.

How much room to leave around the units

The Portable Sanitation Association International says units belong on flat ground and are serviced by large trucks parked near them, so plan the truck's route in. PolyJohn says level ground is best and paved surfaces are ideal. It also says to avoid spots where a truck would struggle to maneuver. Austin Portable Toilets places every unit on delivery, so we'll talk through gates, slopes, and soft ground when you book.

PolyJohn says grouping units in a bank helps keep them from tipping. It hinges the doors on its Comfort series accessible units on the same side as its other units, so a row lines up. The path to an accessible unit needs a firm, stable, slip-resistant surface (ADA section 302.1). Any change in level over 1/2 inch needs a ramp (section 303.4) no steeper than 1:12 (section 405.2).

Common questions

Size questions

How much does a porta potty weigh?

A standard porta potty weighs about 165 to 195 pounds empty. A flushing unit such as PolyJohn's Fleet flush model weighs 243 pounds, while wheelchair-accessible units weigh 240 to 395 pounds.

How many gallons does a porta potty hold?

A standard porta potty's holding tank holds 60 to 70 gallons. According to the Portable Sanitation Association International, each service leaves a 5 to 10 gallon charge of water and deodorizer in the tank.

How many uses before a porta potty is full?

PolyJohn's conservative usage table puts a non-flush tank at about 120 uses and a flush tank at about 75 uses before it's full. The Portable Sanitation Association International's special events standard is about 200 uses per unit, so PolyJohn's figures are the conservative ones.

How tall is a porta potty?

A standard porta potty is 88 to 91 inches tall, or about 7.5 feet. Wheelchair-accessible units run 87 to 92.5 inches tall.
